• MANTOVA SEEN FROM THE WATER

Water, land, history, art, legends: this is Mantova unveiled while sailing the lakes encompassing the town. In the Lago di Mezzo, there stands the stylish design of the Burgo paper-mill (1960) by Pier Luigi Nervi, the “poet of the reinforced concrete”; the memorial park of Andreas Hofer, the hero of the Tyrolese resistance against Napoleon; the XVI century Porta Giulia and the “Vasaron”, the waterfall from the Lago Superiore. The Court of the Gonzaga, a touching sight, like Venice, emerges from the waters with the castle, the towers, the palaces and the basilicas. Beyond the Chasseloup-Masetti dam, the home village of Publius Virgil Marone, Andes, indulges among water lilies. Then, down in the valley, the landscape changes and nature triumphs: wide, floating spreads of Nelumbium, the lotus flowers and of Trapa Natans, the water chestnut which is boiled and eaten in Autumn. Herons fly high up into the sky with night-herons, kingfishers and stilt-birds. Never-ending trailings of poplar and willow trees and fluvial flora, in the splendours of blossoming or in the lush of the sedge-grass and the marshy reeds. This and much more, sailing with us for an hour or an hour and a half.
